George J. Stannard Camp No. 2 was chartered in 2012. It is the first SUVCW camp in the Burlington area in over fifty years. Stannard Camp was named after General George J. Stannard of Georgia who was the first Vermonter to volunteer in 1861 and led the counterattack that decided the fate of Pickett's Charge. The Burlington GAR Post was named Stannard Post 2 and the Burlington SUVCW Camp was originally William Wells Camp 19. Members of Stannard Camp are very active in graves registration, assisting in Civil War research, and are assisting in preservation efforts to help save General Stannard's post-war home in Milton.
